WARNING: YOU ARE SOON TO EXPERIENCE THE MOST AGONISING PANGS OF HUNGER

The Survival Guide to the Food Paradise...Singapore

(of course, it is also a shopping paradise, garden city...)

Hello everybody! I, Chendol Singh, will be your guide today. It's my utmost pleasure to lead you through virtual tour of the food of the lovely isle, Singapore. Yes, does the gentleman sitting in the corner want to ask a question? WHAT? Where is Singapore? NO! It's most definitely NOT in CHINA! cough... wheeze Never mind...

Food is a national passion (or you could say "national obsession") in Singapore, a fact that is not at all surprising considering the diversity of exotic tastes, tempting aromas and distinctive cooking techniques. This overwhelming array stems form the influx of migrants who have brought with them their favourite dishes from their homelands of China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and many other countries. Over the years, various tangibly Singaporean dishes have evolved.

With globalization, the past decades have seen the advent and proliferation of American fast-food chains (McDonald's is a great example) and sushi bars everywhere over the island. However, the widespread popularity of good old hawker fare shows how Asian cuisine has still retained its charm. People still swarm to hawker centres like bees to honey (especially in this time of economic gloom).

There is absolutely no excuse to complain of hunger pangs in Singapore. The problem does not lie with where to eat, but with what to eat since the over 20,000 eating establishments on this island boasts flavours to suit every whim and fancy. So just hop on to our often irreverent guide for the culinary ride of your lifetime, through this tropical (food) paradise--Singapore! -- and let the thousands of tantalizing tastes tickle your tastebuds.
